Louis Friedman received his PhD from the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. He is co-founder and Executive Director Emeritus of The Planetary Society, now the largest space interest organization in the world. He is currently the leader of the LightSail program for The Planetary Society and is currently researching the potential for nano-spacecraft and solar sails for interstellar flight and exploring the future of the human presence in space. He is a member of the American Astronautical Society, the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society, Sigma Xi and Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the British Interplanetary Society and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Among numerous lectures, Dr. Friedman is author of "Starsailing: Solar Sails and Ineterstellar Travel" (Wiley, 1988).
