Press mural by Mexican American artist David Tineo

To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 1989, the University of Arizona Press commissioned Mexican American artist David Tineo to execute a mural, which covers a 500 square foot area on one exterior wall of the former Press building. The design, part of a long tradition of Hispanic mural art in the Southwest, symbolizes some of the publishing strengths of the Press: planetary science, natural history, Native American, Latin American, and Mexican cultures, and many other elements of the more than 550 UA Press books in print.

"Compass to the Southwest" was the 30th mural completed by Tineo, who lives in Tucson. This photograph was taken by Maria Isabel Sanchez.

The University of Arizona Press, founded in 1959 as a department of the University of Arizona, is a nonprofit publisher of scholarly and regional books. As a delegate of the University of Arizona to the larger world, the Press publishes the work of scholars wherever they may be, concentrating upon scholarship that reflects the special strengths of the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Northern Arizona University.

The University of Arizona Press publishes about fifty-five books annually and has more than 1,000 books in print. These include scholarly titles in American Indian studies, anthropology, archaeology, environmental studies, geography, Chicano studies, history, Latin American studies, and the space sciences.

The UA Press also publishes general interest books on Arizona and the Southwest borderlands. In addition, the Press publishes books of personal essays, such as Nancy Mairs's Plaintext and two series in literature: Sun Tracks: An American Indian Literary Series and Camino del Sol: A Chicana/o Literary Series.

Many UA Press books have been translated into foreign languages including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. UA Press books are printed by commercial printers, typically located out of state, which specialize in producing short-run books. All UA Press books are printed on acid-free, archival quality paper.
