University of Arizona Press Books Take Top Honors at Spring Award Ceremonies

Multiple titles published by the University of Arizona Press were recognized during three award ceremonies at BookExpo America—the publishing industry's largest trade show, held annually in New York City. The Press picked up honors at the International Latino Book Awards, the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards, and the Independent Publisher Book Awards.

The International Book Awards recognize the positive contributions to Latino literature by publishers and writers worldwide. Among UA Press honorees, Braulio Muñoz won in the historical fi ction category for his “elegiac and piercing” (Booklist) novel Alejandro and the Fishermen of Tancay. Highlighting titles that expand the readers' world and introduce society to bold voices, ForeWord Magazine awarded Lois Beardslee a bronze medal in multicultural fi ction for The Women's Warrior Society, which Joy Harjo called “wise, tough, and beautiful.” The Independent Publisher Book Awards honor daring and distinctive writing that challenges the world's social, political, and economic issues. Stella Pope Duarte's courageous novel If I Die in Juárez—centering on the femicide taking place in Ciudad Juárez—earned a gold medal in multicultural fi ction.

Leaving each ceremony with two or more winning titles, the University of Arizona Press provided competition to such highly regarded publishing houses as HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Random House.
