Congratulations to dg nanouk okpik, named 2013 American Book Award winner from the Before Columbus Foundation! We're proud to be the publisher of her collection Corpse Whale.
For the last thirty-four years, the Before Columbus Foundation’s American Book Awards have recognized outstanding literary achievement from the entire spectrum of America’s diverse literary community. During the Fair’s early years, the awards ceremony always took place in Miami. This year, the 2013 American Book Award winners were formally recognized at the Fair.
Corpse Whale seamlessly melds both traditional and contemporary narrative, setting dg okpik apart from her peers. The result is a collection of poems that are steeped in the perspective of an Inuit of the twenty-first century—a perspective that is fresh, vibrant, and rarely seen in contemporary poetics.
From the collection
Izrasugruk Tatqiq: February
Coldest Moon: Tatqiq Kusruqaqtubvik
Ice Moon Time Moon of a Higher Sun
Sauniq: Bones and moored pits of whale
blubber, hardy, sturdy, sod storehouses,
made from boorish ones, beat down adopted
sisters, brothers, cousins, and church.
It's a kept secret. Only in Raven's light
may we start. Inuit in bluffs and hills,
baleen gravesites of caribou skin left
behind, molding as myouwls cinch the noose
around her/my parpleche new.
