MEXICAN SPRANGLETOP-Leptochloa uninervia (Presl.) Hitchc. & Chase
DESCRIPTION-Very similar to bearded sprangletop, but the mature spikelets are no more than 1/4 inch long, and lead colored. The spikelets of bearded sprangletop are l/4 to 1/2 inch long, and not lead-colored. Mexican sprangletop grows in the same type of wet places as bearded sprangletop, and is found in Mohave, Pinal, Maricopa, Yuma, and Pima counties; 100 to 3,500 feet elevation; flowering June to October.
This weed is particularly troublesome in the fall in winter barley fields, since it germinates sooner than the barley grains. In the spring it is a great pest in cantaloup crops.
