Launched in 1971, Sun Tracks was one of the first publishing programs to focus exclusively on the creative works of Native Americans. In its first three decades, the series has included more than forty volumes of poetry, prose, art and photography by such distinguished artists as Joy Harjo, N. Scott Momaday, Simon J. Ortiz, Carter C. Revard, and Luci Tapahonso.
The Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers honored The University of Arizona Press as Publisher of the Year at the Ninth Annual "Returning the Gift" Festival for Native American writers in August, 2000. The award cites the Press's “demonstrated commitment and significant contributions as a University Publisher ensuring that the voices of Native writers and storytellers—past, present and future— are heard throughout the world.”
