The aim of the series is to publish selected short books (160-240 pages in length) on major themes and topics related to the Modern American West. The books are to make a significant contribution to scholarship and, at the same time, are to represent broad syntheses that avoid excessive narrowness or specialization. The intent of this series is to publish pathbreaking books that point new directions for more specialized research to follow. The books will, in effect, be extended essays, attractive to general readers and students as well as to scholars, and they will be well illustrated.
